The Checklist
Run through these five lifesaving suggestions before every hike.
- 1
Tell someone your route and return time
Lost hikers are one of the most common rescue calls in these mountains. If you get lost, help starts sooner when someone knows where you're going and when you'll be back.
- 2
Check the forecast and start early
Afternoon thunderstorms build almost daily above treeline in summer. Plan to be off summits and exposed ridgelines by early afternoon.
- 3
Don't count on your phone
There is no cell service at most Uinta trailheads or along the trail. Carry a paper map you can read, and consider a satellite messenger or personal locator beacon.
- 4
Respect the altitude
Many backcountry medical calls here come down to altitude and dehydration: nausea, headaches, exhaustion. Drink more water than feels necessary, and slow your pace.
- 5
Pack correctly
It can be near freezing on a summer morning at elevation, so bring layers. Water runs out sooner than expected, so carry plenty and a way to filter more. Bring a first-aid kit, and a headlamp in case it gets dark.
