Bald Mountain Trail
Mirror Lake Highway
Bald Mountain offers a relatively short but demanding climb to expansive views of the western Uintas. The rocky trail quickly reaches open terrain, where lakes and surrounding peaks come into view as you climb. This is a good choice for hikers who want a summit experience and are comfortable with steep footing, high elevation, and exposed terrain.

More essential trail information
- Start early and watch the sky. The open summit leaves you exposed to lightning. Plan to be off the summit and exposed upper slopes before noon, and turn back sooner if storms develop. Thunder means descend immediately; don't wait for rain.
- Summer can still bring snow. Snow, hail, strong winds, and freezing temperatures are possible at these elevations, even in summer. Carry warm layers, a waterproof jacket, a warm hat, and gloves.
- Short doesn't mean easy. You start above 10,000 feet and climb to nearly 12,000. Pace yourself. Stop climbing if you develop a headache with nausea or dizziness, and descend if symptoms worsen.
- Watch your footing and stay back from edges. The upper mountain has uneven rock, cracks, and steep drop-offs. Keep children close, keep dogs leashed, and allow extra time for the descent. Wet or icy rock makes footing more difficult.
- Check snow and road conditions. Mirror Lake Highway closes seasonally, and an open road does not guarantee a snow-free trail. Check road status and recent trail conditions before leaving.
- Expect little shade. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a secure sun hat. Carry all the water you and your dog will need.
- Display your recreation pass. A valid recreation pass is needed for this fee-area trailhead; eligible America the Beautiful passes are accepted.
