More essential trail information

  • Choose the correct trail. Several routes leave Crystal Lake Trailhead. Follow the signed route toward Wall Lake on the Notch Mountain Trail and confirm junctions with your downloaded map.
  • Know where to turn around. This mileage covers Wall Lake and the return along the same route. Continuing toward Twin Lakes, the Notch, or Clyde Lake adds distance and climbing.
  • Prepare for high elevation. This hike is around 10,000 feet above sea level. Walk at a comfortable pace and allow extra time, especially if you are visiting from a lower elevation.
  • Wear shoes with good traction. Rocks, roots, wet ground, and lingering snow can make an otherwise gentle trail slippery.
  • Use caution around the lake. Keep children close near shorelines and steep rocks. Mountain water can be dangerously cold, even on hot days. Avoid jumping from cliffs or rocks into water with unknown depth or submerged hazards.
  • Carry layers in summer. Snow, hail, cold rain, and freezing temperatures are possible in the Uintas. Bring a warm layer and waterproof jacket.
  • Watch for thunderstorms. Start early and turn back if storms develop. Leave exposed shoreline and high ground; do not shelter beneath an isolated tree.
  • Check road and snow conditions. Mirror Lake Highway closes seasonally. Opening dates vary, and snow may remain on the trail after the road opens.
  • Bring insect repellent. Mosquitoes can be heavy near lakes and wet meadows after snowmelt.
  • Plan for busy parking. Crystal Lake Trailhead serves several popular hikes. Arrive early, park only in permitted spaces, and display the required recreation pass or accepted federal pass.
