More essential trail information
- Start early and plan to be off exposed ridges and summits before noon. Turn back sooner if storms develop; morning conditions are not guaranteed safe.
- Summer doesn't guarantee summer weather. Snow, hail, and freezing temperatures are possible on Kings Peak even during summer. Carry warm layers, a waterproof jacket, a warm hat, and gloves, even when it's hot at home.
- Fresh snow can hide the route and make summit boulders slippery; turn back if conditions deteriorate.
- Check mountain conditions, not just the calendar. Snowfields from winter can linger on high passes and shaded slopes into summer. Check the forecast for Kings Peak's elevation and recent trail conditions before leaving.
- The final ascent from Anderson Pass follows a rocky ridge with boulder scrambling and route-finding; allow extra time for the descent.
- Mosquitoes can be intense in July and August, especially near water.
- Camp more than 200 feet from water sources, trails, and other occupied campsites; follow posted restrictions.
- Henrys Fork Trailhead is reached via remote roads from the Mountain View, Wyoming, area. Fill your fuel tank and download directions before leaving town.
